Brief Description

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) was created when the Library and Archives Canada Act came into force May 21, 2004. This new knowledge institution for Canada replaces the former National Archives of Canada (established in 1872) and National Library of Canada (established 1953).

• A free national library program for persons who are unable to read or use standard printed materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual or physical limitations is operated by the Library and Archives Canada Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LACS), Library of Congress which selects, produces, and distributes books and magazines in braille and recorded formats, and designs and manufactures special playback equipment for use with the audio materials. The LACS International Union Catalog is a database of records for finding books in braille and recorded formats. The 325,000 titles listed are from the LACS collection as well as other agencies serving blind and disabled readers throughout the English-speaking world. Readers may search the full catalog of books in all special formats including an option for books that are in process or choose to limit their search to Web-Braille titles.
