The American Foundation for the Blind removes barriers, creates solutions, and expands possibilities so people with vision loss can achieve their full potential.The AFB Center on Vision Loss in Dallas, TX, provides comprehensive information to millions of older individuals who are blind or visually impaired, as well as their families. The Center helps users to live more independently by connecting them to national and local services and agencies. Visitors to the website and center are provided with a wealth of information on age-related vision loss. In addition, VisionAware, a free, easy-to-use informational website created by AFB in partnership with Reader's Digest Partners for Sight Foundation, provides information for adults with vision loss, their families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and social service professionals.

  • Consultation/Technical Program Assistance
    • Offers professionals who serve people with vision loss with access to information on vision rehabilitation programs, services in the community, and assistive technology, as well as training opportunities in the form of seminars and online courses for teachers of the visually impaired, and blindness rehabilitation professionals.

  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Maintains Esther's Place, a fully furnished model home fitted with simple adaptations and products designed to make daily life more manageable for individuals with vision loss and where they can try out the various low- and high-tech gadgets in a realistic home setting, get ideas for modifications you can make in your own home, and find out where to obtain any of the products.

    • Maintains a toll-free information line (800-232-5463) and an e-mail response service (afbinfo@afb.net). AFB's graphically rich websites are designed to be fully accessible to blind and visually impaired users. The main AFB website (www.afb.org), offers comprehensive, timely, and authoritative information on every aspect of blindness and visual impairment, including an up-to-date, searchable database of nationwide services, message boards, community events, and announcements. The site features an extensive, searchable database of high- and low-tech products and AccessWorld, AFB's free, online technology magazine. It also includes the largest collection of Helen Keller memorabilia on the Internet. The newest addition to AFB's family of websites is VisionAware, developed in collaboration with Readers Digest Partners for Sight, which incorporates AFB's award-winning SeniorSite and is designed to provide adults of all ages with a one-stop resource to cope with vision loss.
