Internet Issues
The Internet has become a well-established forum for the exchange of information, education, entertainment, and the sale of goods and services. Individuals who are blind and visually impaired access the Internet for these purposes and also rely on it to acquire information that was previously available only in printed form. Although generally accepted industry standards facilitate the exchange of e-mail, Web browsing and other Internet-based activities, few government policies have yet addressed accessibility requirements for people with disabilities. The regulations implementing Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act do address Web and other technology accessibility. These requirements apply to federal government technology-based services and purchases. In addition, some arguments have been made that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) covers certain Web-based activities.
