My name is Phil Hatlen. I’m currently the superintendent of the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin, Texas.

Phil, what are three things you want to ensure that parents know about the expanded core curriculum?

Parents need to be partners with teachers and orientation and mobility specialists in the delivery of the expanded core curriculum. And what I would like parents to know so that they can be informed partners, is that their child needs to be assessed in all areas of the expanded core curriculum. That your child, parent, needs an education that carefully balances academics and the expanded core curriculum, and that you, parent, will be called upon to assure that new ECC skills become a routine part of your child’s life.
