Brief Description
Lilac Services for the Blind provides clients experiencing vision loss with training and adaptive devices to improve their opportunities and abilities to be self-sufficient, and resume or continue involvement in their community at the level they choose.
Services Offered
- Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
- Vision rehabilitation therapists, orientation and mobility specialists, assistive-technology specialists, and others teach clients to function independently in their homes and others surroundings. Personalized training includes activities of daily living, home management, food preparation, communication methods. Training in the use of optical devices and assistive aids is a critical component of the services, as is ongoing support.
- Computer Training/Assistive Technology
- Provides demonstrations and training for clients to become proficient with computers, smartphones, and tablets, utilizing magnification and/or screen-reading software.
- Low Vision Services
- Vision is assessed and individualized goals are set. Clients learn of services and devices they can obtain that will help them maintain their self-sufficiency. Those with low vision may receive magnification devices that help them read mail, medication and food labels, books, bills, and important materials. Certain adaptive devices can be provided that help those with any level of vision loss to perform customary life activities. Training in the use of all aids and devices is part of the services.
- Travel/Orientation and Mobility
- Orientation and mobility specialists teach independent travel techniques to clients in their home and community. Training often includes family, friends, and caregivers.
- Braille/Electronic/Audio/Large Print Production
- In-house service transcribes a large variety of materials, such as textbooks, literary books, music, menus, convention materials, trail guides, brochures, maps, charts, tactile materials, legal and medical documents, workplace materials, bus schedules, cards and letters, address lists and much more.
