Brief Description

Founded in 1946, The Lighthouse is a private, nonprofit agency providing direct education and rehabilitation services to people who are blind or visually impaired in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties.
The Lighthouse also provides services to family members and caregivers of those who are blind, and consultation and education to businesses, agencies, institutions and organizations in the community who employ or interact with persons who are blind or visually impaired.
Instructional services include Job Readiness, Independent Living Skills, Orientation & Mobility, Technology Instruction, Community Education, and Summer Camp.

Services Offered

  • Professional Training
    • Public education including speaking engagements, health fairs, exhibits and tours.

  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provides training in personal management, home management and communication.

  • Assessment
    • For rehabilitation, comprehensive assessment provided in the home and/or at center. For Low Vision, comprehensive evaluation and follow-up are conducted at center.

  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Computer instruction including the use of adaptive technology for the blind and visually impaired.

  • Information and Referral
    • Information about services, as well as linkage to other community resources.

  • Low Vision Services
    • Provides low vision evaluation and follow-up. Prescribes low vision devices. Appointments required.

  • Community Outreach Programs
    • Public education including speaking engagements, health fairs, exhibits and tours.

  • Assistive Products
    • Adaptive devices and appliances for sale on site.

  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Provides orientation and mobility training.

  • Recreation Services
    • Focus Group meets once a month for socialization, education and activities.
