Brief Description

The Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) is a not-for-profit agency with professional and support staff who provide comprehensive vision rehabilitation programs annually to more than 2000 people who are blind and visually impaired people in an eight-county area. We teach independent living skills, as well as orientation and mobility, and we offer low vision services, children's services, and continually-expanding technology and employment programs.

Services Offered

  • Counseling
    • Offers individual, group, family, crisis intervention counseling and referral to community services. Provides consultation to other agencies on counseling/social work services; adult support group meetings; children's services; resource advocacy and training activities for visually impaired children.

  • Employment/Job Training
    • Offers job evaluation, training, community placement and facility based employment at Central Industries that manufactures and sells products to state and federal government. Also has Work Activity Center for individuals who are blind and developmentally disabled. Offers telecommunication employment at VA Center.

  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Rehabilitation offers a full range of visual rehabilitation services including independent living skills, orientation and mobility, activities of daily living, vocational rehabilitation, and occupational therapy.

  • Assessment
    • Intake worker and rehabilitation specialist determines present needs and skills level of clients.

  • Consultation/Technical Program Assistance
    • Consultation provided to school districts, social services agencies, health care organizations and the business community.

  • Information and Referral
    • Provides general information about blindness and visually impairment. When appropriate, refers to other community, state, and national organizations. Provides public education and in-service training programs upon request. Offers prevention, vocational, and other educational materials and information.

  • Community Outreach Programs
    • Provides extensive outreach services to entire upstate New York region, ensuring that information about available vision services reaches those in need of agency service.

  • Assistive Products
    • Distributes aids and appliances for independent living, home management and recreation. Products for sale on site.

  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Offers computer training.

  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Professionals teach consumers how to determine their location and travel safely in the home, school, workplace, or community.

  • Braille/Electronic/Audio/Large Print Production
    • Textbooks and other reading material transcribed into braille.

  • Health
    • Offers glaucoma screening, preschool screening, and distance acuity vision screening. Refers for health services.

  • Low Vision Services
    • Certified low vision specialists provide evaluation and prescribe low vision optical aids and devices to maximize remaining vision.

  • Support Groups
    • Has a support group for seniors.

  • Recreation Services
    • Refers and provides consultation to other agencies for some recreational services.
