Preparing for College for Teens Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired

Teenagers who are blind or visually impaired need to gradually assume responsibility for their education. While still in high school, your child should begin managing her workload and assignment deadlines, obtaining accessible textbooks, self-advocating, and leading her IEP meetings. Simultaneously, your child should become increasingly familiar with college processes—admissions, obtaining accessible college materials, utilizing a student disability resource center, and independent living. The more responsibility your teen assumes over her education, the better prepared she will be for her postsecondary education.
