Phil Hatlen Listen to Phil Hatlen’s advice on what parents can do at home to help their child acquire the expanded core curriculum skills.

Transcript

My name is Phil Hatlen. I’m currently the superintendent of the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin, Texas.

How can parents and other family members support their child’s acquisition of the expanded core curriculum? What would you like to ask families to do at home?

Parents must be thoroughly familiar with the expanded core curriculum. You must assist the teacher in assessing your child’s needs. You must make certain that the expanded core curriculum goals are included in your child’s IEP, and you need to know what the teacher is teaching and reinforce those skills at home.
